View Full Version : Now how will they tax us? skypilot 06-18-2008, 09:06 AM How will the government recoup the estimated $60 billion dollars in gas taxes that are currently used to pay for road infrastructure? Any ideas? Texas 06-18-2008, 09:54 AM How will the government recoup the estimated $60 billion dollars in gas taxes that are currently used to pay for road infrastructure? Any ideas? Oh, don't worry about that. They can find many ways to tax us. They can: 1) Give us a yearly tax just for having a car registered. 2) Tax any non-renewable fuel use to stimulate the transition. 3) Raise sales taxes. 4) Raise housing taxes. 5) Raise income taxes. 6) Raise taxes on sin items like tobacco, liqueur, etc. Heck, there are no shortages of ideas out there. At least the taxes are going to our infrastructure maintenance and improvement and not to foreign country's infrastructure maintenance and improvement. This is money well spent. It's the outflow of capital that will kill us. The trade imbalance that slowly bleeds our wealth, not smart infrastructure investment. DaV8or 06-18-2008, 12:04 PM Don't worry about that! Legislators and bureaucrats can dream up taxes all day everyday. If the Democrats take full control in November, there will be no end to the taxation ideas. The one thing you don't ever have to worry about is how they tax us, just why they tax us. Most importantly, where does that revenue go and for what? pennor1 06-18-2008, 01:57 PM Here in Oregon the State already charges a higher registration fee for electric and hybrid vehicles than it does for regular gas or diesel cars. I suspect that all states will soon adopt such fees. kubel 06-18-2008, 02:14 PM They could just tax the hell out of electric cars and make more toll roads. I don't even want to think about it. Makes me sick. Deanwvu 06-18-2008, 02:38 PM Cars don't wear out roads. 60,000 lb trucks wear out roads. Tax them. (or better yet, move to freight rail) Altazi 06-19-2008, 02:36 PM There was quite an outcry when Oregon charged higher registration fees for hybrid vehicles; someone must have been paying attention. Currently, Oregon charges the same registration fee for electric-powered or hybrid-electric passenger vehicles as it does for regular passenger vehicles, $54 for two-year renewal or $118 for four-year (required for new vehicles). As for increasing the taxes on the truckers, surely, why not? Of course, the increased tax burden on the trucking companies will merely be passed on to us as higher shipping charges or higher product prices. The concept that business don't pay taxes, but just pass the costs on to the consumers must be difficult for some to grasp. . . Deanwvu 06-25-2008, 10:57 AM The concept that business don't pay taxes, but just pass the costs on to the consumers must be difficult for some to grasp. . . Freight rail is 3x more fuel efficient (tonnage per mile per gallon of fuel) than trucking. Large trucks do exponentially more damage to roads than their 3000 lb car counterparts. But hey, roads are FREE right? (that's sarcasm) Roads are maintained by the taxpayer. The truckers too, but most people don't see it that way. I imagine the rail industry is out there on its own. No one helps them maintain their systems. What if we sent some of that highway money to make some public rail lines for freight and passenger trains? Take the loads off the road... mikeandmerle2@yahoo.com 06-25-2008, 02:08 PM Can't run tracks into city streets like streets everywhere, but they can put tax hubs on plug-ins like they do trucks to tax us on every mile or foot we drive | |
