It looks like another 2010 competitor is getting ramped up. VW announced plans for some form of hybrid/electric car to be introduced in 2010. Sanyo is building a factory to turn out LiOn batteries for VW. According to this article they will be able to make battereis for 1.7 to 1.8 million cars a year.
